Council News and Information Here are the current Newletters: May/June 2010 April 2010 March 2010 Newsletter Archive *** Urgent - Help Needed *** The Catholic Newman Center at NKU will hold their back to school Mass on Aug 23 at 11am. They plan to have a community meal to follow the Mass. Fr. Bach, the new director of the Newman Center and a big supporter of the Knights, has asked us to provide cooks and grill equipment to help with their event. If you are interested and able to help, please contact Fred Meade ASAP. Membership News First off, we are in a new fraternal year. This year our membership quota is a net of 19 new members, and the insurance quota is 7 new insurance members. Our new WGK Mike Madden has chosen membership as the focus of this fraternal year. Please invite your friends and fellow parishioners to join the Knights. Invite them to our Mass/Social on the 4th Monday of each month. Give them the web address of our Blog, http://blog.kofc5453.org, and the Supreme Web Site, http://www.kofc.org. There are upcoming Degrees. First, on August 22, there will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree held in Lexington, at Christ the King Cathedral. If you have not received your Major Degrees, please consider attending. The 1st Degree will be at 10am, and the 2nd/3rd Degrees will start at noon. For more information, please contact GK Mike Madden, or Brother Dean Adams for more info. The next First Degree for our Council will be on October 4, at 7:30 PM. If you have proposed a man, or are going to, please talk to them now and invite them to that meeting. RSVP News The Council continues its active support of our Seminarians through the RSVP Program. This year we are continuing our adoption of Seminarians Mike Hennigan, Eric Boelscher, and Josiah Booth. We will also be adopting one of the new Seminarians entering this Fall. We will provide contact information in the near future. The Council encourages every member to lift up these men, and all of our Seminarians in prayer. We further encourage you to communicate with them by way of email and cards to let them know you support their vocation and are praying for them. K of C Sonogram Program The Supreme Council has a program whereby they match funds raised by a local jurisdiction to be used for the purchase of a sonogram machine for a crisis pregnancy center. The most consistently effective way to encourage a young woman to keep her baby and not abort is seeing a sonogram of her child. The northern Kentucky Knights have launched a fund to purchase a machine for the Rose Garden Mission. With the matching money, we have about $10K. More is needed. The fund is being chaired and coordinated by Past State Deputy Carl Biery. The Council has made a contribution to this program. Personal donations are needed and can be made by mailing a check to: Carl Biery, Attn:Sonogram Fund, 307 Florence Drive, Newport, KY 41071. Please make checks payable to "K of C Charities" with memo "Sonogram Fund". Rosary Devotion News The Council's monthly 24 hour Rosary Devotion approaching the 3rd anniversary of the program and is doing well, but we need more regular prayer leaders. Please contact WGK Mike Madden for information on how to get involved. Please note the times have changed. The Devotion now runs from noon on Friday, until Noon on Saturday. The next Devotion will be held on September 3 and 4. Soccer Challenge The Council's Soccer Challenge is on! The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is a competition designed for players to demonstrate the most basic soccer skill – the penalty kick. Open to all boys and girls in our community, ages 10-14, where each player will be allowed 15 shots at the goal from the penalty line (12 yards from the goal). Winners progress to the district, regional, state and international levels. The Council event will be held on September 26. The exact time and location are being determined and will be announced as soon as they are set. What we need now are regulation Size 4 and Size 5 soccer balls to volunteer to be kicked. Ideally we need 15 of each size. If you or your child/grandchild have a soccer ball that would like to volunteer, please contact WGK Mike Madden. Tootsie Roll Drive The Tootsie Roll Drive to raise money for programs that assist physically and mentally challenged youth will be held on Oct 8-10. DGK Ron Browning is chairing the program. All monies we receive in donation for this go to programs that aid handicapped youth. 25% goes to the KY State Associate for the Mentally Handicapped, the State Councils association. 75% gets disbursed to the local charity(ies) of our choice. In the past we have supported Milestones Inc, and New Perceptions. Please mark your calendar and join your Brother Knights in support of these worthwhile programs. Contact DGK Ron Browning for more info. Youth 2000 Retreat The Council continues to support the Covington Diocese Youth 2000 retreat for high school youth in our Diocese. This year the retreat is being held at Notre Dame Academy, due to a scheduling conflict at Thomas More College. The event will be held Oct 15-17. The Council will hold Donut Trailers at St. Pius Parish on Sep 26, and MQH Parish on Oct 3 to raise money for the retreat. Because of the venue change, in addition to a need for volunteers to help set up and tear down, volunteers are needed for overnight security at the sight. Youth will not be staying on sight at night, but the facilities need to be monitored. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Fred Meade for more info. Events in Other Councils There are 2 upcoming events in other Councils which merit your attention and consideration. First up is Fr. DeJaco Council's annual Opportunity Day on Sep 19. This program supports mentally and physically challenge youth, giving them the chance to participate in activities they may otherwise not be able to, such as fishing and hot-air balloon rides, etc. The second event is a fund-raiser at Fr. Kehoe Council on Oct 22. They are hosting a fish fry to raise money to help one of their Knights with his medical bills. In addition to dinner, there will be auctions and raffles, including raffling 2 flat screen TVs. Council Recycling Program Proposed It has been proposed that the Council start a recycling program targeted at collecting cans and plastic bottles used in our Hall. Between Council activities, and Hall rentals, a considerable amount of recyclable waste is generated. What is needed is a Chairman for that program to oversee collection and removal of the recyclable waste generated. |
